Prepare for Landing: TCB Health Advises CDC on Communicable Disease Response on Domestic Flights

TCB Health, at the request of NACCHO and CDC, developed strategic, stakeholder-driven recommendations for local health authorities to respond to and communicate about public health emergencies on domestic flights.

Key actions included:

  • Discovering and internalizing priorities of project partners as well as external stakeholders
  • Facilitating multiple stakeholder meetings around relevant discussion questions
  • Drafting report with recommendations and resources

The report, Domestic Flights Communicable Disease Preparedness and E-communications for Travelers: A Summary Report of Local Health Department and Airport Coordination, was delivered to CDC’s Division of Global Migration and Quarantine. CDC will use this report and its recommendations to formalize its guidance for planning for communicable diseases aboard aircraft. This guidance will be disseminated to state and local public health agencies, airports, and others involved in a response.

Community Engagement: TCB Health Engages Public on Bioethics

Research staff at the Mayo Clinic invited TCB Health to participate in the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP) Community Engagement in November 2011. Serving as a small group facilitator, TCB Health worked with seven members of the Olmstead County, MN public to identify their values and concerns regarding their own medical records being used for population-based research.

Key actions included:

  • Working with the team to effectively divide all participants into diverse small groups
  • Facilitating the small group over the course of four days to document values, concerns, questions, and recommendations
  • Providing a summary of the demographics and process within the small group to Mayo Clinic researchers

REP leaders are using the information and recommendations gathered from the community engagement to guide their revisions in policies, practices, and operations. This process marks the first time that the public’s input has been incorporated into REP activities in the project’s 40+ years existence.
